Yes, PVC is safe for kitchen cabinets and has many benefits, including:
- Extremely durable
- Non-toxic
- Resistant to chemical corrosion
- Heat-resistant
- Pest-resistant
- Water-resistant
Yes, PVC is more durable than plywood by industry standards.
Yes, we can stain the PVC to replicate any kind of natural wood finish.
High-density PVC board material is made of sheets of plastic composite. It is understandable that when one talks about high-density PVC board material, the first thing that flashes in mind is bathroom plumbing material, but due to its durability, PVC has many beneficial uses with modular kitchens in demand, PVC has gained popularity as a kitchen cabinets material too.
There are two types of PVC boards for kitchen cabinets: medium-density boards and high-density boards. As the name implies, PVC medium-density boards have a softer core, whereas PVC high-density boards are thicker and sturdier. While both types of PVC material can give the same glossy/matt look, PVC medium-density boards have low thermal resistance and can often sag way too soon due to lack of strength, unlike PVC high-density boards.
Thermofoil cabinets are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) which is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrillator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. covered by veneer plastic and resin finish, making it a softer and less durable material. It has also been proven to be susceptible to water damage, thus creating the premise for mould build-up by absorbing water quicker and faster than solid wood (consider this before installing next to a sink!) and as well as being prone to attracting pests.
On the other hand, PVC is one of the most preferred materials for kitchen cabinets in the market for the following reasons:
- Zero maintenance – Considering the material is plastic, PVC cabinets are super easy to clean, and don’t keep any types of stains. This means that PVC requires almost no maintenance.
- Termite-resistant – With PVC, you don’t have to worry about termites, wood borers and other insects destroying your cabinets. These materials are termite-free, waterproof, oil-proof and anticorrosive. Once installed, the material will stay as it is.
- Durability – PVC foam boards are not only sturdy and durable but also rot-proof and thus, last longer without causing any major damage.
- Cost effective – PVC is a cheaper and more eco-friendly material to purchase than solid wood.
